Class 3 :: English Literature :: Afternoon on a Hill by Edna St. Vincent Millay (Roots)

Afternoon on a Hill

by Edna St. Vincent Millay (Roots)

The Poem :

"I will be the gladdest thing

        Under the sun!

I will touch a hundred flowers

        And not pick one.

I will look at cliffs and clouds

        With quiet eyes,

Watch the wind bow down the grass,

        And the grass rise.

And when lights begin to show

        Up from the town,

I will mark which must be mine,

        And then start down!"

Summary of the Poem :

The poet would be the happiest being on a hill under the afternoon sun. She would touch a hundred flowers without picking anyone. She would look at cliffs and clouds with her quiet eyes. The wind would bend the grass down with pressure. The grass would rise again once the wind pressure decreases.

Then,  gradually, it would become dark evening. The lights of the town would be seen from distance. The poet would identify which light belongs to her place. Then she would start climbing down the hill.
