The Poem :
"The moon has a face like the clock in the hall;
She shines on thieves on the garden wall,
On streets and fields and harbour quays,
And birdies asleep in the forks of the trees.
The squalling cat and the squeaking mouse,
The howling dog by the door of the house,
The bat that lies in bed at noon,
All love to be out by the light of the moon.
But all of the things that belong to the day
Cuddle to sleep to be out of her way;
And flowers and children close their eyes
Till up in the morning the sun shall arise."
Summary of the Poem :
The poet says that the face of the moon is like the clock in their hall. The moon shines on the thieves on the garden wall. She shines on the streets and fields and on the platforms in the harbours. She also shines on the sleeping birds in their nests on the branches of the tree.
The nocturnal creatures like cat, mouse, dog and bat come out in the moon. The cat is squalling the mouse squeaking and the dog howling by the door of the house. The bat lies in bed during the day. As it comes out at night.
All the animals of the day sleep in their cosy bed during night. They do not come out in the light of the moon. Both the flowers and children sleep closing their eyes till the sun shines in the morning.

= I think I like both being out at night and during the day.
I would like to be out more during the day. Because I have to go to school, to the market, to friend's house during the day. It is safer to be out during the day. Unless we can find ourselves in danger or trouble.
I would like to be out less at night. I would just be out at night to experience it. To experience the world at night. I would love to see my school at night. How does my school look like at night. I like to see the night sky. I like to identify the constellations in the sky at night. But I would do all these under the guidance of an adult.

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) was born in Scotland. A Child's Garden of Poems is one of his best known collections of poetry for children. He also wrote two popular novels, Treasure Island and Kidnapped.
