1. What is the significance of the Northern Mountains?
= The Northern Mountains act as a wall along the northern boundary of India.
The Northern Mountain ranges are sources to many Himalayan rivers like the Indus, Ganga, Yamuna, Satluj, Kosi and Brahmaputra.
The slopes of the mountain ranges are covered with valuable forests.
The geographical location and natural beauty of this region attracts tourists from all over the world.
2. Give a short note about the people, who reached at the top of the Mount Everest.
= High mountains have always challenged and attracted men and women. Many of them have tried to reach the top of these mountains. Many were successful. Tenzing Norgay of Nepal and Edmund Hillary of New Zealand reached the top of Mount Everest in 1953. Bachendri Pal, was the first Indian woman to climb this peak in 1984.
3. What do you know about the Himalayan Mountain Ranges?
= Himalaya means the abode of snow. These mountain ranges are shaped like an arc and extend from Jammu and Kashmir State in the north-west to Arunachal Pradesh in the east. Further these high mountains turn southwards and are known as the North-Eastern Hills. Himalayan Ranges are divided into three divisions - i) Great Himalayas (Himadri), ii) Middle Himalayas (Himachal), and iii) Lower Himalayas (Shivalik).
4. How do the Himalayas protect us from the very cold winds?
= The Himalayas act as a wall along the northern boundary of India and thus protecting us from the very cold winds.
5. Write a short note presenting the special features of following states.
(a) Jammu and Kashmir.
= Jammu and Kashmir has two capitals. Srinagar is the capital in the summer season and Jammu in the winter season. Kashmir remains cool during summers and very cold during winters. The Kashmiris use kangri (a small pot with burning coal) to keep themselves warm. Men and women generally wear phiran (a woolen garment) and salwar.
(b) Tripura.
= Tripura is surrounded by Bangladesh from three sides. Agartala is the capital city. Rice and jute are the main crops. Bamboo is also grown here. It is used to make handicraft items.
(c) Sikkim and West Bengal.
= Sikkim is a small state and is located on high mountains and deep river valleys. The people belong to three main tribes-Lepcha, Bhutia and Nepali. The women wear boku and colourful jewellery made from beads. Sikkim is famous for orchids. Gangtok is the capital city of Sikkim.
Darjeeling in West Bengal is a popular hill station. It has many tea gardens, which produce tea of good quality. The main economic activity of the people is tea cultivation. Kolkata is the capital city of West Bengal.
(d) Arunachal Pradesh.
= Arunachal Pradesh is the largest State in north-east. It, however, has a small population. Itanagar is the capital city. people live in stilt houses. This protects them from rain and the wild animals. Brahmaputra river enters India through this State.
(c) Assam and Uttarakhand.
= River Brahmaputra has made Assam very fertile. Rice and jute are the main crops. Tea is grown on the lower slopes of hills. Dispur is the capital and Guwahati is the largest city. The people of the State speak Assamese. They celebrate Bihu.
Uttarakhand incorporates the Garhwal and Kumaon hills. Farming is the main economic activity of this place. Mussorie, Nainital and Almora are the popular hill stations. Other famous tourism and pilgrim places include Haridwar, Badrinath, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath and Ranikhet. Dehradun is the capital city of Uttarakhand.
