C. Short answer type questions.
1. Describe the coastal plains of India.
= India has a long coastline (Indian Mainland) which is more than 6000 kilometres long. It starts from the Gulf of Kuchchh in the north-west and goes southwards along the Arabian Sea. From Kanniyakumari, it moves northwards along the Bay of Bengal to reach up to West Bengal.
2. Write a short note on the island groups of India.
= There are two groups of islands which are a part of our country. The Lakshadweep group is located in the Arabian Sea and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are situated in the Bay of Bengal.
3. How does the plain land on the eastern coast differ from that of the western coast?
= Eastern coastline is broader than the western coastline. Eastern coastline has many deltas formed by the many rivers. Western coastline has lagoons and backwaters.
4. What are the advantages of a long coastline?
= A long coastline has many advantages for the location. It has a pleasant hot and humid climate. It has fishing activity on a large scale. It has many natural ports for transport or business activity. salt is made in the coastal areas by drying sea water. Beautiful beaches are the big tourist attraction centres.

(a) Life of people in the coastal areas.
= The life style of the people in eastern and western coastal plains varies according to the climatic condition and topographical location. Both the eastern and western coastal plains cover some parts of states located the east, like Karnataka, West Bengal, Odisha and Tamil Nadu and the Western states are Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala and Goa.
(b) West Bengal.
= West Bengal lies at the Eastern Coastal Plain. The soil of the region is very fertile. The main crops grown are rice and jute. Kolkata is the capital city. It has many jute and textile mills. People speak Bangla. They celebrate Durga Puja. People love to eat fish and rice.
(c) Odisha.
= It is located at the eastern coast. Puri and Bhubaneshwar are the important temple towns of Odisha. The State is also famous for its handicraft items. Chilika Lake, with its bird sanctuary, is a major tourist attraction.
(d) Gujarat.
= The people of Gujarat are traders and farmers. The main crops are cotton, jowar, bajra, wheat and sugar cane. Diary farming is popular in and around Anand. Petroleum and natural gas have been found in Ankleshwar. The port at Kandala is used to export and import goods. Salt is made in the coastal areas by drying sea water. Ahmadabad is the largest city and has many textile mills. Gandhinagar is the capital of Gujarat. The Gir National Park is home to the Asiatic Lion. The People speak Gujarati. Men wear churidar pyjama and kurta. Women wear saree or lehenga. Ras-Garba is a popular folk dance.
(e) Goa and Kerala.
= Goa lies towards the south of Maharashtra. Its beautiful beaches are the big tourist attraction centres. Panaji is the capital of Goa. Majority of people are farmers and fishermen. The main crops grown here are rice, coconut, cashew nut and mangoes. Goa has rich iron ore deposits. St. Xavier's Church, Mahalakshmi Temple and Fort Aguada are the places for tourist interest.
Kerala lies in the extreme south of the Malabar Coast. The capital city is Thiruvananthapuram. The major crops grown here are rice, coconut, rubber, cocoa, coffee and spices. Kerala is the most literate State of India. Almost everyone knows how to read nd write. Malayalam and English are the main languages. Kathakali and Mohiniattam are the main classical dances. Onam is a popular festival. Snake boat races are held during Onam.
